The three pillars

Vata, Pitta, Kapha — the language Ayurveda uses to describe you

Ayurveda holds that everyone is built from the same five elements — earth, water, fire, air, ether — combined into three functional energies, called doshas. Most people run on a blend of two, with one usually dominant.

Air + Ether

Vata

Governs movement — breath, circulation, thought. Quick to create, quick to tire. Balanced Vata feels like flow; imbalanced Vata feels like scatter.

Fire + Water

Pitta

Governs transformation — digestion, metabolism, focus. Sharp and driven by nature. Balanced Pitta is clarity; imbalanced Pitta is heat and edge.

Water + Earth

Kapha

Governs structure — immunity, stability, lubrication. Steady and grounded by nature. Balanced Kapha is strength; imbalanced Kapha is inertia.

VATA PITTA KAPHA Prakriti

This overlap is your prakriti — your natural constitution, set at birth and referenced in every consultation we offer.

The science, unpacked

History, the doshas, and how Ayurvedic treatment actually works

Ayurveda — from ayus (life) and veda (knowledge) — is one of the world's oldest continuously practiced medical systems. Here's the grounding you need before your first bottle of oil or first consultation.

Origins

A five-thousand-year timeline

c. 1500 BCE

Vedic roots

References to healing herbs and ritual medicine appear in the Atharvaveda, laying the groundwork for a formal medical tradition.

c. 600 BCE – 200 CE

The classical texts

The Charaka Samhita (internal medicine) and Sushruta Samhita (surgery) are compiled, systematizing diagnosis, anatomy, pharmacology, and surgical technique into what we now call classical Ayurveda.

c. 200 – 1200 CE

Eight branches formalized

Ashtanga Ayurveda takes shape — eight specialized branches spanning internal medicine, surgery, toxicology, pediatrics, and psychiatry, taught at institutions like Nalanda and Takshashila.

c. 1200 – 1800 CE

Regional spread and synthesis

Ayurveda travels across South and Southeast Asia, exchanging ideas with Siddha, Unani, and Tibetan medicine along the way.

1835 – 1947

Marginalization under colonial policy

Colonial medical administration favors biomedicine, and government funding for Ayurvedic education and practice sharply declines.

1947 – present

Institutional revival

Independent India re-establishes Ayurvedic colleges and a dedicated ministry (AYUSH); the WHO now recognizes traditional medicine systems, and global research into Ayurvedic herbs has expanded steadily.

The tridosha theory

Vata, Pitta, Kapha — in depth

Every bodily function is understood as an expression of one of three doshas. Diagnosis and treatment both start with figuring out which is out of place.

Vata

Air · Ether

Dry, light, cold, mobile, subtle, irregular. Vata governs the nervous system, breath, and elimination — anything involving motion.

In balance

Creativity, adaptability, quick thinking, natural rhythm.

Out of balance

Anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, irregular digestion, racing thoughts.

Pitta

Fire · Water

Hot, sharp, light, oily, intense. Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, and how you process — food, information, emotion.

In balance

Strong digestion, sharp intellect, courage, warm leadership.

Out of balance

Irritability, acidity, inflammation, rashes, an over-heated drive.

Kapha

Water · Earth

Heavy, slow, steady, cool, oily. Kapha governs structure, immunity, and lubrication — the body's ballast.

In balance

Strength, endurance, calm, loyalty, resilient immunity.

Out of balance

Lethargy, weight gain, congestion, resistance to change.

How treatment works

From diagnosis to daily practice

Ayurvedic treatment isn't a single remedy — it's a layered system that runs from initial assessment down to what's on your plate each morning.

01 Prakriti assessment

A practitioner reads pulse, tongue, skin, and lifestyle patterns to determine your baseline constitution and your current state of imbalance (vikriti) — the gap between the two is the treatment target.

02 Agni — the digestive fire

Ayurveda treats digestive strength as the root of most imbalance. Treatment plans routinely start by stabilizing agni before addressing anything else.

03 Panchakarma — deep cleansing

A five-part detoxification protocol used for more significant imbalances, always under supervision:

  • Vamana — therapeutic emesis for Kapha excess
  • Virechana — purgation for Pitta excess
  • Basti — medicated enemas for Vata excess
  • Nasya — nasal administration for head and neck
  • Raktamokshana — blood purification therapy

04 Dinacharya — daily routine

Waking before sunrise, tongue scraping, oil pulling, self-massage (abhyanga), and consistent mealtimes — small daily anchors believed to keep doshas from drifting.

The apothecary

Formulations made the traditional way

Churnas, oils, and rasayanas prepared according to classical methods. Every product is tagged by the dosha it's traditionally used to pacify.
